New Zealand’s top female track cyclists are expecting the most competitive national championships ever next week when the Avantidrome in Cambridge hosts its first event.
With the Bike New Zealand elite track cycling squad training at the centre for the past few months, times are coming down as the team prepares for nationals better than ever before.
Before the elite riders were moved to Cambridge, South Canterbury cyclist Lauren Ellis said she would have to prepare on the road for national champs.
“You’d head to the velodrome two or three days before nationals, and have like three runs out on track,” she said.
“Once you’d got on track, you’d remember what it was like and then hope for the best at nationals. Now we’re on here nearly every day and it’s making a huge difference.”
